Education & research

The population of the Faroes is educated to a high standard and there is free access to education for everyone. Apart from primary and secondary schools, there are a number of institutions for higher education and research. The Faroese Educational System
The Faroese educational system is modern and is continually subjected to improvements. Educational institutions are up to date concerning both curriculum’s at different levels in the educational system and institutions’ ability and capability to cooperate with institutions outside the Faroes. Studying in the Faroes

Higher Education and Research
The University of the Faroes focuses its teaching and research on Faroese and Nordic language as well as literature, in addition to the natural and social sciences.

The Faroese Fisheries Laboratory (FFL) conducts various marine research and provides the Government with scientific advice based on its research on marine resources and the environment. The aim of the research is to provide a basis for a responsible exploitation of the marine resources around the Faroes.

The Research Council main tasks are to advise the Government and industry on matters of research policy and to administer the research fund, which funds research development and innovation. The members of the Council are appointed by the ministers of health, industry, fisheries, research and by the Faroese Employers’ Association.

Many Faroe Islanders study abroad in a wide range of fields. The opportunity for mobility in higher education is an important means for a small population to maintain a broad perspective on developments in a globalised world.
