The Faroe Islands in North Pacific fisheries negotiations
The Faroe Islands are participating as observers in the current meeting of the NPRFMO, North Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation. The meeting takes place in South Korea and opened this week. Since 2006 South Korea, Japan, USA, Canada, Russia and Taiwan have conducted international negotiations to establish NPRFMO, which is to manage all fisheries in international waters of the North Pacific.
The North Pacific is one of the few areas in international waters where there is no regional fisheries organisation. But now the negotiations to establish such an organisation are underway.
The purpose of the Faroese participation is to gain insight into the negotiations and thereby increase knowledge and create a basis for future opportunities and rights regarding fishery in this region.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Jørgen Niclasen, is keen to stress the importance of participating in the work of such international organisations:
‘Our aim is to have a resource management plan that will ensure sustainable and innovative business opportunities for the Faroese fishing fleet. That is why it is important that the Faroes now participate in establishing an international fisheries organisation for the North Pacific in a similar manner as when the Faroes were involved in establishing a similar organisation in the South Pacific.’
The Faroe Islands are an experienced partner in international resource management organisations. Such organisations with Faroese membership include NAFO, NEAFC, NAMMCO, NASCO and SPRFMO.
