10-12-2007 | Fisheries Consultations 2008 concluded

THE NEW AGREEMENT WITH THE EU FOR 2008 IS ALMOST ON THE SAME LEVEL AS FOR 2007.

The annual fisheries consultations between the EU and the Faroe Islands were held on 4th and 5th of December in Brussels. The new agreement for 2008 is almost on the same level as for 2007.
The agreement for 2008 covers quotas in the EU-zone for mackerel, horse mackerel, blue whiting, sprat and for shrimps in Greenland.
The banks of industrial fish in the North Sea, sandeel and blue whiting, are still poor. The quotas for these species have subsequently been reduced over the last couple of years. This has also affected the 2008 quotas which are a bit lower than 2007. Earlier this year the coastal states lowered their quotas for the same species proportionally.
The quotas for mackerel in the North Sea have increased for 2008 whereas the quotas for shrimps and deep sea species in Greenland remain unchanged.
